Dear Friends,                                                                                                                         Pentecost 2026

This year the day of Pentecost falls on the exact same day (24th May) as when John Wesley, who started the Methodist movement, had an experience which changed his life.

He went to a service at Aldersgate Street in London “somewhat unwillingly” but, as a Bible text was being read and explained to him, he felt that his heart was “strangely warmed” and he knew God’s grace applied to him personally.

Wesley realised that his experience, felt deep in his heart, was for all people – not just for a few and he went on to spread the message that all people can be saved by God’s grace.  Then he got on a horse and rode all over the country in order to preach the good news!

Many centuries earlier, on the Day of Pentecost, the early believers were together when God’s Holy Spirit rested on them like tongues of fire.  Believers could suddenly be understood by passers by from all over the world in their mother tongues.  This experience opened up the good news of Christ’s saving grace to all who were in earshot.

These days there are so many ways of communicating, and God is reaching out to us today – in 2026 – with the same good news that all can be saved by God’s grace.

I’m not sure that Pentecost Sunday and 24th May will coincide again in my lifetime but it’s a lovely coincidence to start the season of Pentecost and the Sundays following.

With love and blessings!

Rev Stephen
